The Sweet Tradition

Food and the offerings

  La ofrenda these days

“The individual will proceed to take everything he used while alive, to continue his work in the afterlife.

Historically, from the Pre-hispanic to the Colonial elements on the offerings, food has always been the main element in the Mexican ofrendas (altars). As is described in the rules dictated by Teomihcatzin, the god responsible for the creation of the underworld, “The individual will proceed to take everything he used while alive, to continue his work in the afterlife. He will take his corn meal, nine tortillas of seven different varieties, amaranth atole (beverage), and turkey meat. He will deposit nine seeds of nine different varieties in a reed cane, to cultivate and support his other life”, Teomihcatzin said; however, wheat (bread) was not part of the indigenous foods placed in pre-hispanic offerings. Nevertheless, that changed with the colonial times until today.
